A 66-year-old man developed repeated atrioventricular block followed by asystole during low-dose dexmedetomidine administration after cervical spinal surgery.
Case Report (n=1)
No
Dexmedetomidine infusion for postoperative sedation can cause severe atrioventricular block and repeated asystole, particularly in patients undergoing extensive cervical surgery and receiving concurrent AV node-blocking agents or fentanyl.
May precipitate recurrent asystole even after discontinuation; leaves open the true incidence with dexmedetomidine in cervical surgery.
