May influence regional pulmonary vasomotor tone; hypothesis-generating for Cl- channel roles in pulmonary hypertension.
This study provides the first electrophysiological recordings of Cl- currents from small pulmonary arterial vessels, indicating differential Ca2+ regulation and distribution throughout the pulmonary circulation.
Clapp et al. (1996) studied this question. Flash photolysis of Nitr-5 and caffeine application was evaluated on Activation of Ca(2+)-activated Cl- currents (ICl(Ca)). Rapid increases in cytosolic free calcium activated Cl- currents in 80% of cells isolated from the main pulmonary artery and 43% of cells from small vessels.
