A focus on key areas of concern regarding the nutritional intake and resulting nutritional status of older persons should lead to improved health and wellness. The article discusses areas of concern including oral health, fluid intake level, and selected minerals and vitamins such as calcium, magnesium, iron, chromium, and vitamins B6, B12, C, and D. It also identifies the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) for these key nutrients and current policies regarding nutrition programs. Even though nutrition standards and policies change, older persons must continue to focus on nutrient-dense foods, as most nutritional requirements of older adults do not change with age alone.
