Early CT-1 expression in hypertensive rats warrants no clinical action; leaves open its biomarker role pending mechanistic studies.
Does cardiotrophin-1 gene expression correlate with the development of ventricular hypertrophy in genetically hypertensive rats?
Cardiotrophin-1 mRNA expression increases early in genetically hypertensive rats but does not appear to play a mechanistic role in the development or maintenance of left ventricular hypertrophy.
Ishikawa et al. (1999) studied ventricular hypertrophy associated with hypertension. Spontaneously hypertensive rats/Izm stroke-prone (SHRSP/Izm) vs. Wistar-Kyoto/Izm (WKY/Izm) rats was evaluated on cardiotrophin-1 mRNA level in the ventricle. Cardiotrophin-1 mRNA expression was significantly augmented in 4-week-old spontaneously hypertensive rats compared to controls, preceding overt ventricular hypertrophy.
