Key result
HCM exhibits a ~55% smaller day-night LF/HF ratio difference than controls, indicating impaired autonomic activity.
Why the study?
Does autonomic nerve activity differ in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy compared to healthy controls, and is it associated with ventricular tachycardia?
Observational (n=48)
No
Does autonomic nerve activity differ in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy compared to healthy controls, and is it associated with ventricular tachycardia?
Absolute Event Rate: 0.99% vs 2.2%
p-value: p=<0.005
Patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy exhibit relative sympathetic hyperactivity, which may contribute to the occurrence of ventricular tachycardia.
Impaired autonomic balance may heighten VT risk in HCM; hypothesis-generating and requires prospective validation before practice change.

K Fukushima (1995) conducted an observational in Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) (n=48). Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy vs. Healthy controls was evaluated on Day-night difference in LF/HF ratio (ΔLF/HF) (p=<0.005). Patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy exhibited a significantly smaller day-night difference in the LF/HF ratio compared to healthy controls (0.99 vs 2.20, p<0.005), indicating impaired autonomic nerve activity.
