Key result
Common carotid IMT shows no association with subsequent CAD events in type 1 diabetes.
Why the study?
Carotid artery intima-media thickness is associated with subsequent cardiovascular events in the general population, but this association has not been established in type 1 diabetes.
Does carotid intima-media thickness predict first coronary artery disease events in patients with type 1 diabetes?

1309 participants with type 1 diabetes in the DCCT/EDIC cohort
Comparison
Higher vs lower common and internal carotid artery IMT levels
Design
Long-term observational follow-up study

Does not support carotid IMT for CAD risk prediction in type 1 diabetes beyond traditional factors; leaves open its utility in refined models or other populations.

Does carotid intima-media thickness predict first coronary artery disease events in patients with type 1 diabetes?
Hazard Ratio: 1.14 (95% CI 0.97–1.33)
p-value: p=0.1206
In patients with type 1 diabetes, carotid intima-media thickness is not independently associated with subsequent coronary artery events after adjusting for traditional cardiovascular risk factors.
Polak et al. (2021) conducted a cohort in Type 1 diabetes (n=1,309). Common carotid artery intima-media thickness (IMT) was evaluated on First coronary artery disease event (HR 1.14 per 0.09 mm, 95% CI 0.97-1.33, p=0.1206). Common carotid artery IMT was not significantly associated with subsequent coronary artery disease events in type 1 diabetes after adjusting for traditional risk factors (HR 1.14; 95% CI 0.97-1.33).
