Should not change mitral valve assessment or repair strategies; leaves open translation of ovine annular dynamics to human disease.
Karlsson et al. (1998) studied Normal mitral valve physiology (n=7). Surgical attachment of radiopaque markers was evaluated on Three-dimensional size, shape, and motion of the mitral leaflets and annulus. In an ovine model, the mitral annulus became most elliptical in middiastole, and coaptation occurred very near the leaflet edges during the rapid fall of left ventricular pressure.
