IV pulse steroids and plasmapheresis linked to a ~27% LVEF increase in acute transplant rejection.
Why the study?
Outcomes needed evaluation in heart transplant recipients presenting with acute rejection and decompensated heart failure who could not undergo endomyocardial biopsy.
Does IV pulse steroid plus plasmapheresis improve survival and left ventricular function in heart transplant patients with acute rejection and decompensated heart failure who cannot undergo biopsy?
Cohort (n=27)
No

Answers are grounded in this paper and cite their sources.
IV pulse steroid combined with plasmapheresis may improve left ventricular function and provide reasonable survival in heart transplant recipients presenting with acute rejection and decompensated heart failure who cannot undergo biopsy.

Karahan et al. (2022) conducted a cohort in Acute rejection with decompensated heart failure after orthotopic heart transplantation (n=27). IV pulse steroid plus plasmapheresis vs. Pre-treatment baseline was evaluated on Left ventricle ejection fraction (p=<0.05). In heart transplant patients with acute rejection and decompensated heart failure, treatment with IV pulse steroids and plasmapheresis significantly improved left ventricular ejection fraction from 25.11% to 52.14%.
