Supports integrin targeting for FMDV studies in ruminants; leaves open whether this informs vaccines or antivirals.
Brown et al. (2006) studied Foot-and-Mouth Disease Virus (FMDV) tropism. Integrin-alpha(v)beta(6) expression analysis was evaluated on Tissue distribution of integrin-alpha(v)beta(6). Integrin-alpha(v)beta(6) is constitutively expressed in the normal airways of cattle and sheep, suggesting ruminant airway epithelium is a highly accessible target for FMDV infection by inhalation.
