Abstract

Left ventricular (LV) mass assessed by echocardiography has been observed to increase monotonically with age in a recent Framingham Study report 1 and in other studies. Blood pressure and body mass are 2 of the most important risk factors for increased LV mass; both tend to increase with age. The question arises whether increased LV mass is an inevitable consequence of aging, or whether LV mass remains stable with age in the absence of other risk factors. We analyzed the relation of LV mass to age in a healthy subset of Framingham Study participants who were studied routinely by echocardiography.
