Low-dose L-NMMA may enhance survival in rat hemorrhagic shock models; leaves open translation to human resuscitation.
Does L-NMMA improve hemodynamics and survival in rats subjected to hemorrhagic shock?
Absolute Event Rate: 68.8% vs 26.7%
p-value: p=< 0.05
In a rat model of hemorrhagic shock, low-dose NO synthase inhibition with L-NMMA improves hemodynamics and survival, whereas high-dose administration is deleterious.
Yao et al. (1996) studied Hemorrhagic shock. NG-monomethyl-L-arginine (L-NMMA) vs. Controls was evaluated on 48-h survival rate (p=< 0.05). Infusion of 2.0 mg/kg L-NMMA significantly improved the 48-h survival rate from 26.7% to 68.8% in rats subjected to hemorrhagic shock (P < 0.05), whereas a 20.0 mg/kg dose was deleterious.
