Key result
Max carotid IMT >2.2 mm linked to ~214% higher cerebral infarction prevalence in hemodialysis patients.
Why the study?
Are carotid ultrasound parameters (max IMT and plaque score) associated with cerebral infarction and left ventricular diastolic function in chronic hemodialysis patients?
Cross-Sectional (n=63)
No
Are carotid ultrasound parameters (max IMT and plaque score) associated with cerebral infarction and left ventricular diastolic function in chronic hemodialysis patients?
In chronic hemodialysis patients, maximum carotid IMT is associated with prevalent cerebral infarction, while carotid plaque score correlates with left ventricular diastolic dysfunction.
Max IMT >2.2 mm was associated with cerebral infarction in hemodialysis patients; hypothesis-generating for carotid ultrasound risk stratification, prospective studies needed.

Matsuda et al. (2009) conducted a cross-sectional in Chronic hemodialysis (n=63). Maximum carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) > 2.2 mm vs. Maximum carotid IMT ≤ 2.2 mm was evaluated on Presence of cerebral infarction detected by brain MRI or CT (OR 3.14, 95% CI 1.11-8.92). A maximum carotid intima-media thickness >2.2 mm was significantly associated with a higher prevalence of cerebral infarction in chronic hemodialysis patients (OR 3.14).
