ANP elevation from rapid pacing does not increase sodium clearance in dogs; leaves open ANP's natriuretic role in other models.
Does rapid ventricular pacing-induced release of atrial natriuretic peptide cause natriuresis in dogs?
In a canine model, elevated atrial natriuretic peptide concentrations induced by rapid ventricular pacing are not sufficient to produce natriuresis.
Walsh et al. (1988) studied this question. Rapid ventricular pacing vs. Baseline was evaluated on Haemodynamic, renal and endocrine changes (including sodium clearance and ANP concentrations). Rapid ventricular pacing in dogs markedly increased atrial natriuretic peptide concentrations (P<0.01) but did not significantly change sodium clearance.
