May implicate endothelium in quinine-dependent thrombocytopenia; leaves open clinical relevance pending human validation.
Endothelial cells express the GP IIIa quinine-dependent epitope found on platelets, but lack other platelet glycoprotein epitopes for these antibodies.
Pfueller et al. (1990) studied Quinine- and quinidine-induced thrombocytopenic purpura (n=4). Quinine was evaluated on Quinine-dependent IgG binding on endothelial cells. Endothelial cells express the GP IIIa quinine-dependent epitope found on platelet GP IIIa, but not those on other platelet glycoproteins, as observed by immunoblotting with sera from 4 patients.
