Isoproterenol reduces myocardial oxygen uptake and cuts mitochondrial respiratory rates by ~50% in vitro.
Isoproterenol directly decreases in vitro myocardial tissue and mitochondrial oxygen uptake, suggesting a primary effect on mitochondrial respiratory enzymes independent of increased in vivo oxygen demand.
May indicate direct mitochondrial impairment by isoproterenol in vitro; leaves open relevance to in vivo oxygen dynamics or clinical use.

Poderoso et al. (1995) studied Normal myocardial tissue (n=50). Isoproterenol vs. Epinephrine, norepinephrine, or normal nonperfused hearts was evaluated on Oxygen uptake and respiratory enzyme activities. Isoproterenol decreased oxygen uptake by heart slices in a dose-dependent manner, and decreased state 3 respiratory rates by 50% and respiratory control ratios by 30% in isolated mitochondria.
