Brain SPECT links cerebral hypoperfusion to cognitive dysfunction in neurologically asymptomatic hypertensive patients.
Why the study?
The relationship between cerebral blood flow assessed by 99mTc-HMPAO brain SPECT and cognitive function in patients with arterial hypertension was not well characterized.
Does 99mTc-HMPAO brain SPECT detect cerebral hypoperfusion associated with cognitive dysfunction in patients with arterial hypertension?

Does 99mTc-HMPAO brain SPECT detect cerebral hypoperfusion associated with cognitive dysfunction in patients with arterial hypertension?
Answers are grounded in this paper and cite their sources.
99mTc-HMPAO brain SPECT demonstrates that arterial hypertension is associated with cerebral hypoperfusion and cognitive dysfunction even before the onset of focal neurological symptoms.
Article focuses on the use of 99mTc-HMPAO brain SPECT for evaluation of cerebral blood flow in patients with arterial hypertension and identification of the relationship of brain perfusion and cognitive function. Using SPECT of brain with 99mTc-HMPAO it was found out that hypertensive patients even in the absence of focal neurological symptoms have hypoperfusion of the brain which leads to cognitive dysfunction: decreased attention, psychomotor speed and slow thought processes.

Ефимова et al. (2015) conducted an observational in Arterial hypertension. 99mTc-HMPAO brain SPECT was evaluated on Brain perfusion and cognitive function. 99mTc-HMPAO brain SPECT demonstrated that hypertensive patients without focal neurological symptoms exhibit brain hypoperfusion associated with cognitive dysfunction.
