Endothelial LPS and IL1ß stimulation increases venous fibrin deposition to ~80% via tissue factor activity.
Why the study?
The relationship between endothelial tissue factor expression levels and thrombus formation under blood flow conditions was not fully characterized.
The level of tissue factor activity expressed on endothelial cells governs thrombus formation, which is also affected by blood flow shear rates.

Endothelial TF may drive inflammatory venous thrombosis in this model; leaves open whether targeting it alters human outcomes.
Diquélou et al. (1995) studied Thrombogenesis. LPS and/or IL1ß stimulation vs. Non-stimulated HUVECs was evaluated on Fibrin deposition at 50 s-1. Stimulation of endothelial cells with LPS and IL1ß increased fibrin deposition to 80% at venous shear rates, demonstrating that tissue factor activity governs thrombus formation.
