Key result
Acute CPAP reduces ETCO2 and increases HRV in patients with chronic heart failure.
Why the study?
The physiological influence of acute treatment with different levels of CPAP on cardiac autonomic balance and respiratory responses in stable COPD and CHF patients was not well characterized.
Does acute CPAP treatment improve cardiac autonomic modulation and respiratory responses in patients with stable COPD and CHF?

Acute CPAP treatment improves neural control of heart rate in patients with stable CHF, though the optimal pressure level varies by underlying disease.

Acute CPAP may enhance autonomic modulation in stable CHF; extends evidence to comorbid COPD populations.
Reis et al. (2010) conducted an RCT in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Chronic Heart Failure (CHF) (n=28). Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) vs. Sham ventilation and spontaneous breathing was evaluated on Cardiac autonomic modulation (HRV) and respiratory responses (ETCO2) (p=<0.05). Acute treatment with continuous positive airway pressure reduced end-tidal carbon dioxide across all groups and increased the SDNN index of heart rate variability in patients with chronic heart failure.
