Deleting the African swine fever virus 8CR gene fails to alter growth or virulence.
Why the study?
The 8CR ORF of African swine fever virus, similar to C-type lectins, may be significant for virus-host cell interactions but its role in virus growth and virulence was unclear.

8CR deletion does not attenuate ASFV in swine; leaves open its role in pathogenesis and as a vaccine target.
Neilan et al. (1999) studied African swine fever virus infection. 8CR deletion mutant (delta8CR) vs. Parental Malawi Lil-20/1 virus was evaluated on Growth characteristics in vitro and disease/virulence phenotype in vivo. A deletion mutant of the African swine fever virus 8CR gene exhibited identical in vitro growth and unaltered in vivo virulence compared to the parental virus in domestic swine.
