Cold exposure boosts VEGF expression ~3-fold more in UCP1-ablated mice, independent of thermogenic oxygen consumption.
Why the study?
It was unclear whether cold-induced VEGF gene expression in brown adipose tissue depends on hypoxic oxygen levels generated by thermogenic processes.
Effect estimate: 3-fold higher in UCP1-ablated animals
Cold-induced VEGF expression in brown adipose tissue is independent of thermogenic oxygen consumption and is consistent with adrenergic regulation.

Does not inform clinical practice; leaves open UCP1-independent VEGF pathways for future angiogenesis research.
Fredriksson et al. (2005) studied this question. Cold exposure vs. Wild-type mice vs UCP1-ablated mice was evaluated on VEGF gene expression in brown adipose tissue (3-fold higher in UCP1-ablated animals). Cold exposure stimulated VEGF expression in both wild-type and UCP1-ablated mice, with a 3-fold higher effect in UCP1-ablated animals, indicating independence from thermogenic oxygen consumption.
