Enoxaparin matches UFH in preventing post-operative DVT after elective hip surgery.
Why the study?
The comparative influence of prophylactically equivalent doses of Enoxaparin and unfractionated heparin on in vivo coagulation after elective hip surgery was unclear.

Does Enoxaparin 30 mg twice daily inhibit in vivo coagulation differently than unfractionated heparin 7500 I.U. twice daily in patients after elective hip surgery?
Enoxaparin and unfractionated heparin provide equivalent in vivo coagulation inhibition and DVT prophylaxis after elective hip surgery, while elevated pre- and post-surgical prothrombinase activity may predict DVT risk.
Ofosu et al. (1992) conducted an RCT in Elective hip surgery. Enoxaparin vs. Unfractionated heparin (7500 I.U. twice daily subcutaneous injections) was evaluated on Concentrations of endogenous thrombin-antithrombin III in pre- and post-surgical plasmas and incidence of post-operative DVT. Enoxaparin and unfractionated heparin were equally effective in reducing post-operative DVT and inhibited in vivo coagulation to the same extent after elective hip surgery.
