MDV inoculation drives higher brain inflammatory cytokine expression in chickens with transient paralysis versus controls.
Why the study?
The immunological mechanisms underlying transient paralysis induced by very virulent plus strains of Marek's disease virus in susceptible and resistant chicken lines were not well understood.
Infection with a very virulent plus strain of MDV induces transient paralysis and differential neuroinflammatory gene expression in both susceptible and resistant chicken lines.

Extends acute TP and cytokine upregulation to MD-resistant chickens with vv+ MDV; leaves open mechanistic validation and field relevance.
Xu et al. (2012) studied Marek's disease (transient paralysis). Very virulent plus strain of Marek's disease virus (MDV) vs. Uninfected control birds was evaluated on Gene expression profiling and histological analysis in brains. Inoculation with MDV induced significantly higher brain expression of inflammatory cytokines in chickens exhibiting transient paralysis compared to asymptomatic or uninfected control birds.
