Key result
Aortic A-39 cells show superior rhinovirus sensitivity over standard cell lines, yielding titers up to 10^5.5.
Why the study?
Human aorta-derived cell lines have demonstrated utility for isolating and propagating rhinoviruses and may offer greater sensitivity than other cell lines used.
Population
Human aorta cell lines including A-39
Comparison
A-39 cell line vs WI-38 and human embryonic kidney cells
Design
Preclinical cell culture study

Suggests utility of select cell lines for rhinovirus propagation; leaves open validation and relevance to modern clinical or research use.
Human aorta cell lines, particularly A-39, are highly effective and sensitive for the isolation and propagation of rhinoviruses compared to standard cell lines.
Phillips et al. (1965) studied Rhinovirus isolation. Human aorta cell line (A-39) vs. WI-38 or human embryonic kidney cells was evaluated on Sensitivity to rhinovirus serotypes and infectivity titers. The human aorta cell line A-39 was more sensitive to prevalent rhinovirus serotypes during the 1963-64 winter than WI-38 or human embryonic kidney cells, reaching infectivity titers up to 10^5.5 TCD50/ml.
