Mitral valve histology reveals cardiac amyloidosis as a rare cause of chordal rupture.
Why the study?
Severe mitral valve regurgitation due to ruptured chordae in patients with systemic cardiac amyloidosis is uncommon and not well characterized.
Population
38-year-old man with severe mitral valve regurgitation and systemic amyloidosis

Rare amyloid cause of chordal rupture and mitral regurgitation; extends valvular phenotypes but remains hypothesis-generating.
Case Report (n=1)
Cardiac amyloidosis can rarely present with severe mitral regurgitation due to ruptured chordae caused by amyloid deposits.
Nishi et al. (2008) conducted a case report in Severe mitral valve regurgitation due to cardiac amyloidosis (n=1). Mitral valve repair was evaluated. Histological analysis following mitral valve repair in a 38-year-old man revealed amyloid deposits in the mitral valve and ruptured chordae, suggesting cardiac amyloidosis as a rare cause of rupture.
