Key result
Hypothermic core cooling and rewarming persistently lowers cardiac output by ~43% despite preserved energy stores.
Why the study?
Conflicting results exist regarding the extent to which cardiovascular function can be reestablished after rewarming from hypothermia.

LV function and output depressed at 25°C in dogs; leaves open translation to human therapeutic hypothermia.
Tveita et al. (1994) studied Hypothermia and rewarming. Core-cooling to 25 degrees C and rewarming vs. Precooling baseline was evaluated on Hemodynamic function and myocardial metabolism. Core-cooling to 25 degrees C and subsequent rewarming in dogs resulted in a persistent depression of cardiac function (e.g., cardiac output 57% +/- 9% of precooling) despite adequate energy stores.
