Key result
Acute heart failure is linked to ~18% in-hospital mortality in young hypertensive patients in Libreville.
Why the study?
Acute heart failure is a frequent condition with limited data describing its clinical, paraclinical, therapeutic, and evolutionary aspects in the Intensive Cardiology Care Unit of Libreville.
Observational (n=60)
No
High mortality in young hypertensive acute HF patients in Libreville merits clinical vigilance; leaves open prospective studies on modifiable triggers.
Conclusion. ABSTRACTIntroduction. Acute heart failure is a medical condition in which the heart fails to pump enough blood to meet the body's needs. The aim of this study was to describe the epidemiological, clinical, paraclinical, therapeutic, and evolutionary aspects of acute heart failure (AHF) in the Intensive Cardiology Care Unit (ICCU) of the University Hospital Center of Libreville. Methodology. This was a retrospective study over a period of 1 year from January to December 2023 focusing on all patients over 18 years old followed at the ICCU for acute heart failure. Results. We recorded 60 patients suffering from AHF, with a prevalence of 20% and a sex ratio of 0.9, with a mean age of 56 ± 17.95 years. The main risk factor was high blood pressure (58%). The most common clinical presentation was that of global heart decompensation (70%). Underlying heart diseases were severe with a mean left ventricular ejection fraction of 36.4% ± 15.90. The main comorbidities were anemia and renal impairment. The main factors leading to decompensation were infections (42%) and therapeutic non-adherence (38%). The mortality rate was 18.3%. Conclusion. Acute heart failure is common in cardiology at the University Hospital Center. It affects a young hypertensive population with numerous comorbidities.

Christian et al. (2024) conducted an observational in Acute heart failure (n=60). Acute heart failure was evaluated on In-hospital mortality. Acute heart failure in Libreville predominantly affected a young hypertensive population (mean age 56 years) and was associated with an 18.3% in-hospital mortality rate.
