Key result
Slow-release clonidine lowers 24-hour systolic BP by ~16 mm Hg versus placebo.
Why the study?
The antihypertensive effect of a slow-release clonidine preparation in ambulatory hypertensive patients was evaluated using 24-h intraarterial blood pressure monitoring.
Effect estimate: Reduction of 16 mm Hg (systolic) and 10 mm Hg (diastolic)

Suggests SR clonidine may aid 24-h BP control in outpatients; hypothesis-generating and needs randomized confirmation.
Mancia et al. (1981) studied Essential hypertension. Slow-release (SR) clonidine vs. Placebo was evaluated on 24-h systolic and diastolic arterial pressure (Reduction of 16 mm Hg (systolic) and 10 mm Hg (diastolic)). Slow-release clonidine significantly reduced 24-hour systolic and diastolic arterial pressure by 16 and 10 mm Hg, respectively, compared to placebo.
