Key result
Captopril plus pravastatin is linked to a ~20% reduction in LDL-C in hypertensive hypercholesterolemia.
Why the study?
Lowering blood pressure and improving lipid and glucose metabolism are key to preventing cardiovascular events in hypertensive patients with dyslipidemia, but the effects of long-term combination therapy with an ACE inhibitor and an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor were not well studied.
Population
22 hypertensive patients with hypercholesterolemia
Comparison
Captopril monotherapy followed by captopril plus pravastatin combination therapy
Design
Observational study
Follow-up
18 months combination therapy after 6 months monotherapy

May support captopril-pravastatin for lipid control in hypertension; hypothesis-generating and should not change practice without RCTs.
Observational (n=24)
Yes
Effect estimate: 19.9% reduction
p-value: p=<0.05
SHIONOIRP et al. (2004) conducted an observational in essential hypertension with hypercholesterolemia (n=24). Captopril and pravastatin combination therapy vs. Baseline was evaluated on Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (19.9% reduction, p=<0.05). Long-term combination therapy with captopril and pravastatin significantly reduced LDL-C by 19.9% and total cholesterol by 13.9% from baseline in hypertensive patients with hypercholesterolemia.
