Key result
Acute changes in hematocrit inversely alter left maximal spatial voltage in polycythemic and anemic patients.
Why the study?
The influence of acute variations in hematocrit on the QRS complex of the Frank scalar electrocardiogram was not well understood in patients with polycythemia and anemia.
Comparison
Moderate reduction versus increase in hematocrit levels
Design
Observational study of acute hematocrit variations on QRS complex

Acute hematocrit changes may confound QRS voltage in cyanotic CHD; leaves open need for adjusted ECG norms in research.
Rosenthal et al. (1971) studied Severe polycythemia or anemia (n=39). Acute variations in hematocrit vs. Baseline was evaluated on Magnitude and delay in left maximal spatial voltage (LMSV) and maximal anterior force. Acute reduction of hematocrit in polycythemic patients increased the magnitude of left maximal spatial voltage, whereas raising hematocrit in anemic patients decreased these voltages.
