Halothane reduces maximal stroke volume ~41% in isolated hearts, exceeding other volatile anesthetics.
Why the study?
The comparative effects of halothane, enflurane, and isoflurane on coronary vascular tone, myocardial performance, and oxygen consumption during controlled changes in aortic and left atrial pressure were not fully characterized.

In vitro rat heart data should not guide anesthetic selection; leaves open in vivo confirmation of differential myocardial effects.
Sahlman et al. (1988) studied this question. Halothane, Enflurane, and Isoflurane vs. Control group was evaluated on Maximal stroke volume (SVmax). In isolated rat hearts, halothane, enflurane, and isoflurane significantly decreased maximal stroke volume compared to control, with halothane causing a more pronounced decrease (41%) than others (26%).
