Aurora extravascular ICD provides a viable alternative when vascular access is infeasible or undesirable.
Case Report
Highlights a potential safety issue regarding inappropriate ventricular fibrillation detection in patients with an extravascular implantable cardioverter-defibrillator.
The Aurora™ extravascular implantable cardioverter-defibrillator system (EV-ICD, Medtronic, Inc.) is an alternative for indicated patients in whom vascular access is either infeasible or undesirable. It is comprised of a pulse generator, placed subcutaneously along the left lateral chest wall in the mid-axillary region, connected to a single lead which is tunneled subcutaneously from the pulse generator to the subxiphoid space, and then substernally. The lead includes two ring electrodes and two coil electrodes (Figure 1).

Khetarpal et al. (2026) conducted a case report in Indicated for implantable cardioverter-defibrillator. Aurora extravascular implantable cardioverter-defibrillator system (EV-ICD) was evaluated. The Aurora extravascular implantable cardioverter-defibrillator system serves as an alternative for indicated patients in whom vascular access is infeasible or undesirable.
