This review analyzes film and television adaptations of the dream of the red chamber, highlighting ideological trends and audio-visual language.
Dream of the Red Chamber, one of the Four Great Classical Novels of China, is renowned worldwide for its tortuous plots, three-dimensional characters and profound background. Since the 20th century, with the rise of electronic media, its film and television adaptations have attracted the attention of academia and industry. The social features and technological levels of different eras have shaped film and television works in different historical periods. Thus, this paper provides a detailed review of the film and television works of Dream of the Red Chamber in various eras. From the perspective of audio-visual language and quantitative methods, the paper conducts a comparative analysis of the film and television content and the changes in ideological trends from three aspects: classic scenes, typical characters, and the theme of the work to provide ideas for the secondary creation of the film and television adaptation of classic literary works.
