Key result
Upcoming RCT evaluates a 6-month self-care education program for clinical outcomes and behavior in HF.
Why the study?
Studies on self-care education have shown conflicting effects, and providing printed guides alone may not improve self-care behavior and clinical outcomes in heart failure.
Does a comprehensive self-care educational programme improve clinical outcomes and self-care behaviour in people with heart failure?
Population
160 people with HF
Comparison
Multicomponent educational self-care intervention plus standard care vs self-care guide plus standard care
Design
Randomized controlled trial study protocol
Follow-up
6 months

Does a comprehensive self-care educational programme improve clinical outcomes and self-care behaviour in people with heart failure?
This study protocol outlines a randomized controlled trial to evaluate whether a comprehensive self-care educational program improves clinical and behavioral outcomes in patients with heart failure.
D’Souza et al. (2021) conducted an RCT in Heart failure (n=160). Self-care education programme (video-assisted teaching, teach-back, tailored discharge teaching, telephonic calls, text messages) vs. Printed guide on self-care with standard care was evaluated on Clinical outcomes (health-related quality of life, hospital readmissions, NT-proBNP, symptom perception, functional status, LVEF, Seattle HF score), self-care behaviour, and knowledge. A 6-month self-care education programme will be evaluated in a randomized controlled trial of 160 patients with heart failure to assess its impact on clinical outcomes and self-care behaviour.
