Cardiac rehabilitation improves HFpEF quality of life and function, cutting E/e' ratio ~66% versus usual care.
Why the study?
Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction accounts for over half of heart failure cases globally with high morbidity and mortality, but lacks proven medical treatments showing mortality benefit.

Background: Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) represents more than one half of the heart failure cases worldwide with increased morbidity and mortality. No proven medical treatment till now has shown mortality benefit in HFpEF. This study aims to elucidate the benefit of cardiac rehabilitation (CR) in HFpEF.

Ayad et al. (2020) conducted an RCT in Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) (n=60). Cardiac rehabilitation (aerobic exercise on treadmill) vs. Usual medical care only was evaluated on Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire (MLWHFQ) total score mean percentage of reduction (p=<0.001). Cardiac rehabilitation significantly improved quality of life, functional capacity, and diastolic function parameters, including a 66.0% reduction in E/e' ratio, compared to usual medical care in patients with HFpEF.
