Archaeological evaluation uncovers medieval features in Priors Hardwick, indicating possible historical settlement significance.
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken at Home Farm, London End, Priors Hardwick, in order to determine if the demolition of the existing farmhouse and surrounding agricultural buildings and the erection of a new dwelling would impact on significant archaeological remains. The work was carried out in accordance with The Chartered Institute for Archaeologists Standards and Guidelines for an archaeological evaluation. Three evaluation trenches were positioned amongst the extant farm buildings and one trench revealed two 12th century features possibly related to a boundary in which was found pottery, daub and animal bone. A probably post-medieval stone lined drain was revealed in another trench. The 12th century features appear to be within the settlement which is partly protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
