Myocardial oxygen consumption (MVO2) was studied in a canine right heart bypass preparation. At constant heart rate and left ventricular peak developed tension (calculated from ventricular volume and pressure), doubling cardiac inflow increased MVO2 by 1·3 ml./100 g LV/min. This approximate 10% increase is attributed to increased contractile element shortening and work.
