Combining LAA reservoir strain and P-wave dispersion predicts paroxysmal AF with an AUC of ~0.98.
Why the study?
Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation is challenging to detect early due to its intermittent nature, prompting evaluation of an integrative electro-mechanical model combining left atrial appendage function and P-wave dispersion for risk stratification.
Do left atrial appendage strain and P-wave dispersion predict paroxysmal atrial fibrillation in patients evaluated in sinus rhythm?

Do left atrial appendage strain and P-wave dispersion predict paroxysmal atrial fibrillation in patients evaluated in sinus rhythm?
The combination of left atrial appendage reservoir strain and P-wave dispersion provides high predictive accuracy for identifying paroxysmal atrial fibrillation in patients presenting in sinus rhythm.

Demirtola et al. (2025) conducted an observational in Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (n=191). Left atrial appendage reservoir strain (LAA-Sr) and P-wave dispersion (PWD) vs. Sinus rhythm (SR) control group was evaluated on Prediction of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (LAA-Sr) (OR 1.315, 95% CI 1.201-1.439, p=<0.001). Left atrial appendage reservoir strain and P-wave dispersion independently predicted paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, with their combined model achieving an AUC of 0.983.
