Plasma prorenin levels were similar between hypertensives (14.6 ± 8.6 ng/mL/h) and normotensives (15.1 ± 7.0 ng/mL/h), correlating positively with age only among normotensives (r = 0.82; P < .001).
Elderly normotensive men exhibited lower prorenin (11.6 ± 4.1 vs 18.6 ± 7.4 ng/mL/h; P < .05) and total renin (13.2 ± 3.9 vs 20.0 ± 7.5 ng/mL/h; P < .05) compared to normotensive women.
