In dogs with congestive heart failure, endogenous BNP and NO preserved diastolic function, whereas NO, but not BNP, inhibited beta-adrenergic responsiveness.
Why the study?
Does the modulation of natriuretic peptides and NO affect LV function and beta-adrenergic responsiveness in normal and heart failure dogs?

Endogenous BNP/NO modulation of LV function in canine HF is hypothesis-generating; leaves open translation to human therapies.
Hart et al. (2001) studied Congestive heart failure. Intracoronary infusion of HS-142-1 and L-NMMA, or BNP and SNP vs. Saline was evaluated on Inotropic response to intravenous dobutamine (percent change in first derivative of LV pressure) and time constant of LV pressure decay. In dogs with congestive heart failure, endogenous BNP and NO preserved diastolic function, whereas NO, but not BNP, inhibited beta-adrenergic responsiveness.
