ABSTRACT To extend life span of lithium‐ion batteries and meet the charging requirements in most industrial applications, a wireless power transfer (WPT) system must not only provide load‐independent constant current (CC) and constant voltage (CV) outputs but also be capable of supporting multiple output specifications. This paper proposes a multi‐mode WPT system based on a reconfigurable magnetic integrated primary side coil. By configuring the primary side structure, the proposed system can selectively implement a two‐coil structure in CC mode and two different three‐coil structures in two CV modes. The system can meet single current output mode and two different voltage output specifications to meet different lithium‐ion batteries charging needs. Therefore, the designed system has strong versatility. Second, a mathematical model is established and the load‐independent CC output and multi‐mode CV output characteristics and zero phase angle (ZPA) operation of the system are analyzed in detail. Finally, this paper describes the construction of an experimental prototype capable of delivering a 2.7‐A current output and two different voltage output specifications including 56 and 68 V to prove the feasibility of the proposed system.
