Overview

May support post-ICD rehabilitation; observational data leaves open causal effects and need for RCTs.

Structured PICO

Does early comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation improve functional capacity, left ventricular function, and quality of life in patients following ICD implantation?

P
Population
45 patients (28 males, mean age 62.2 years) after implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) implantation
I
Intervention
Comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation initiated 6 weeks after ICD implantation, consisting of a 2-week inpatient Phase I and a 12-week outpatient Phase II
O
Outcome
Changes in left ventricular ejection fraction, peak oxygen uptake, exercise duration, depressive symptoms (BDI), and quality of life (SF-36) before and after the rehabilitation programsurrogate

Early comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation after ICD implantation is safe and significantly improves left ventricular systolic function, exercise capacity, and quality of life while reducing depressive symptoms.
