Why the study?
Does conventional heparin therapy alter plasma levels of F 1 + 2, TAT complexes, and D-dimers in patients with acute proximal deep vein thrombosis?
Population
15 patients affected by acute proximal deep vein thrombosis, complicated or not by pulmonary embolism
Comparison
Conventional heparin therapy for 9 days vs Normal healthy blood donors (for reference values)
Design
Cohort
Follow-up

D-dimer may retain diagnostic value shortly after heparin start in acute DVT; extends prior observations but leaves open role in treatment monitoring.
Does conventional heparin therapy alter plasma levels of F 1 + 2, TAT complexes, and D-dimers in patients with acute proximal deep vein thrombosis?
Heparin rapidly improves the hypercoagulable state in acute DVT as measured by F 1 + 2 and TAT, but does not significantly alter D-dimer levels, supporting the utility of D-dimer assays for diagnosis even after heparin initiation.
