Overview

May warrant caution with anabolic steroids during exercise; leaves open translation to human maladaptive remodeling.

Structured PICO

P
Population
Male Wistar rats (n=84, 14 per group)
I
Intervention
Nandrolone decanoate (5 mg/kg subcutaneous, twice weekly) with or without swimming (5 times/week) and with or without losartan (20 mg/kg/day) for 10 weeks
C
Comparator
Control group (no steroids, no exercise, no losartan)
O
Outcome
Ventricular function, collagen synthesis, and local renin-angiotensin system activitysurrogate

In a rat model, supraphysiological doses of anabolic steroids combined with aerobic exercise induced maladaptive cardiac remodeling and fibrosis via activation of the local renin-angiotensin system, negating the cardiovascular benefits of exercise.
