Angiotensin-sympathetic coupling merits mechanistic follow-up; leaves open any clinical role for combined blockade in hypertension or ischemia.
Rapid intravenous injections of angiotensin increased systemic pressure and reduced coronary flow while cardiac output remained unchanged or reduced. After a few seconds cardiac output and coronary flow increased. After β-adrenergic blockade, angiotensin produced only a reduction in cardiac output and the coronary flow increase per unit rise of pressure was diminished. These studies provide further evidence indicating an intimate association between angiotensin and the sympathetico-adrenal axis.
