An optically detecting method for the decomposing reaction of SF6 gas by the arc discharge is proposed. A thin film of crystal violet which changes its color as the reaction with HF generated from the discharge in SF6 is deposited on a glass substrate by vacuum evaporation. The arc discharge is carried out in a glass container filled with SF6 gas for a simulation as a gas equipment. The ingredients and quantities of decomposed gases are analyzed by ion chromatography and the F-ion concentration is proportional to the discharge time. The change in the transmission and reflection spectra of dye films placed in the glass container are measured as a function of the discharge time. The change of tristimulus values X, Y, Z of the CIE colorimetric XYZ system and the CIE 1976 L*a*b* uniform color space are also evaluated. Since the correlational results of these parameters with the discharge time, corresponding to the HF concentration, are obtained, the possibility of optically watching and detecting the breakdown and abnormal phenomena in the gas insulating equipments is confirmed.
