Population

Barbitone anaesthetised dogs subjected to 60 min of left anterior descending coronary artery occlusion followed by 3 h of reperfusion.

Intervention

Nicorandil (100 microgram/kg bolus followed by a 10 microgram/kg/min infusion) or glyceryl trinitrate (10 microgram/kg bolus followed by a 1 microgram/kg/min infusion) given intravenously either 15 min before occlusion or 10 min before reperfusion.

Comparator

Equivalent volume of saline given intravenously.

Outcome

Myocardial infarct size expressed as percent of the area at risk.surrogate

Both nicorandil and glyceryl trinitrate reduce myocardial infarct size in a canine ischemia-reperfusion model, particularly when administered prior to occlusion.
