SummaryThe effect of metallic contamination (Cu, Zn, Cr6+ and Fe3+) on visual appearance has been assessed by examination of Hull cell panels and the scanning electron microscope has been used to examine surface topography. The influence of a given concentration of a metallic contaminant on the visual appearance and surface topography of nickel deposits was dependent on the particular contaminant and nickel plating solution involved. Copper had the most drastic effects on the nickel solutions investigated and ultimately resulted in black deposits which were of dendritic form.
