Implantation of aortic bioprostheses in sheep resulted in a stenotic left ventricular outflow tract, leading to acute congestive heart failure and sudden death when exposed to environmental heat stress.

This report highlights cases of pre-term sudden death in a sheep model used for the preclinical safety assessment of bioprosthetic aortic valves.
May confound preclinical aortic bioprosthesis testing in sheep; leaves open environmental stressor effects on model validity.
Background: Sheep have long been established as an animal model in heart valve research for the preclinical safety assessment of prosthetic and bioprosthetic cardiac valves. Complications unrelated to the implant or surgical procedure are uncommon, but do represent a significant loss of data when they occur. Here we report the pre-term deaths of 3 sheep implanted with a bioprosthetic aortic valve.

A 2014 study conducted a case report in Aortic bioprosthesis implantation (n=3). Aortic bioprosthesis implantation was evaluated on Cause of early death. Implantation of aortic bioprostheses in sheep resulted in a stenotic left ventricular outflow tract, leading to acute congestive heart failure and sudden death when exposed to environmental heat stress.
