The Acute Effect of Aminophylline on Left Ventricular Function in Patients with Heart Failure

10 patients with acquired valvular or hypertensive heart diseases (5 mitral stenosis, 3 hypertensive heart disease, 1 aortic and mitral regurgitation, 1 mitral stenosis and regurgitation), NYHA class II-III, treated at Tokyo University Hospital.

Aminophylline (theophylline ethylenediamine) 250 mg diluted with 20 ml normal saline infused over 5 minutes into the pulmonary artery through a right heart catheter.

Baseline hemodynamic measurements obtained before injection of aminophylline.

Acute hemodynamic changes including cardiac output, left ventricular forward fraction, circumferential shortening rate, left ventricular end-diastolic pressure, end-diastolic and end-systolic volume, left ventricular mean force, and total peripheral vascular resistance measured about 20 minutes after infusion.surrogate
