K channel openers shorten prolonged APD and suppress EADs induced by class III antiarrhythmics.
Why the study?
Do K channel openers (nicorandil, Y-26763) suppress early afterdepolarizations and APD prolongation induced by class III antiarrhythmic drugs in dog Purkinje fibers?
Do K channel openers (nicorandil, Y-26763) suppress early afterdepolarizations and APD prolongation induced by class III antiarrhythmic drugs in dog Purkinje fibers?
p-value: p=<0.01
K channel openers like nicorandil may suppress the arrhythmogenic effects (such as early afterdepolarizations) of class III antiarrhythmic drugs.
May attenuate class III proarrhythmia in canine Purkinje fibers; leaves open whether K channel openers reduce torsades risk in patients.

Kondo et al. (1997) studied Class III antiarrhythmic drug-induced early afterdepolarizations (in vitro). K channel openers (nicorandil, Y-26763) vs. E-4031 or d-sotalol alone was evaluated on Action potential duration (APD90) and early afterdepolarizations (EAD) (p=<0.01). K channel openers (nicorandil and Y-26763) significantly shortened the action potential duration prolonged by class III antiarrhythmic drugs and suppressed the induced early afterdepolarizations.
